HPI SAVAGE XL OCTANE - unboxing and first look

HPI SAVAGE XL OCTANE – unboxing and first look

Don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE! 🙂

After years of anticipation it has finally arrived, the HPI Savage XL Octane. I’ve been wanting to get a monstertruck for such a long time, but didn’t want to mess around with nitro or have a silent MT experience with electric, being a 5th scale passionate, this 2 stroke engine is the ticket. Today I managed to get my hands on one. I’m unboxing it, and will also tell you why this is my weapon of choice for my future hardcore bashing. I show you what comes in the kit, and will try to give you as many details as possible. This is a revolutionary new concept, and I think it will be a game changer for the RC hobby as we know it.

The following description comes from the HPI website:

“15cc Gasoline Engine,
XL-Size Chassis!

We’ve taken the ground-breaking GT15C Octane engine, a 2.7hp, 15cc 2-stroke gasoline engine, and strapped it into the award-winning Savage XL long-wheelbase chassis for a one-of-a-kind RC experience! The Savage XL Octane has fistfuls of aggression, a gigantic size, lower fuel costs and extra-long runtimes – what more could you want?

The grunt from the Octane engine lets you throw up dirt roosts and blast through sand, leaves, mud and water with ease! The Savage XL Octane’s 3 speed transmission gives you quick acceleration from a standing start with super-efficient shifts for an experience you’ll never forget! The 4-shoe Quadra clutch gets the power from the engine to the drivetrain in no time flat, and the all-metal, ball bearing-supported 4WD shaft drivetrain is super-durable to handle whatever you come across. The XtraLarge wide track and XtraLarge wheelbase of the Savage XL chassis work with the XtraLarge Terra Pin tires to make the Savage XL Octane easy to drive and maneuver over and through jumps and obstacles…or whatever is in your way!

The Savage XL Octane is completely pre-built, just like all RTR (Ready To Run) vehicles from HPI Racing. The engine is a pull-start design, and easily starts with a single tug. Rechargeable HPI Plazma battery packs and AA batteries are included to power the hassle-free 2.4GHz radio system and engine control system – all you need to provide is pump gasoline and you are ready to rock!”

I purchased this car at Østfold RC: www.Østfold-rc.no

Seriously, that thing just looks like it will own all! I finally have the perfect excuse to buy a Savage! I just hope it performs as good as it looks.
“Tight” body clips can be challenging, but they’ll loosen up eventually…

The price seems a but hefty, but the aftermarket support for these cars is very affordable and more importantly well available! For the price you get a real good looking, well engineered vehicle.

Hi Jeff, it has been very much worth the wait it seems. I think we’re equally excited to see a new potentially big player enter the stage!

Can’t wait to see you run it. Savage tip from a savage owner, ditch the rear hubs, especially with the octane being heavier than all other savages. The stock ones will snap the tab off where the rear toe rod bolts to it. Integy makes a one piece rear hub that completely eliminates that whole system. Hpi makes a kit as well, but it’s 200 USD, also you get aluminum front hubs and some other upgrades for your money.

Way Awesome! I was wondering how you would open this one, kinda hard to start a chainsaw that late at night,I thought that was great, I would love to get a Savage I been looking into 5th scale but I really like the HPI Savage, can’t wait to see your first running video,Awesome unboxing bud, thumb’s up!

Looks cool even without the body on it. I know nothing of these, my 3 are all traxxas things that I like swapping bodies on. This thing – without the body – reminds me of a sprint car or hot rod. I reckon it has a lot of potential 🙂

Nice one Chris, thanks for sharing.

Hi Chris, I think there’s defiantly a market out there for this truck cos when you are gonna be getting the 2 stroke experience for 1/8 scale prices, spares and upgrades for 1/5 scale trucks cost a lot more and I think thats what stops people going to 1/5 scale, great vid buddy.

It’s more about “the spine” than the “clothing”. I like my RC’s to look personalized anyway, so new body and wheels will be part of the transformation. And there are countless options out, I’m even considering Baja wheel adapters. 🙂

Very nice vid. from a owver of 5 savages including a 1/5 savage. If the new tranny is like the old one the 3rd gear will need to adj. but you will need to remove the gears from the tranny to adj. 3rd gear. C-hubs could use a upgrade and the stock brakes are ok but could also be upgraded because they wear fast. Also locktite your wheel nuts or they will come off. I aslo think this truck is a game changer.

A center skid plate will turn the savage into a rolling garbage can for any debris that gets flick up and in through the top….all that debris needs a way out and that is through the bottom.

+HemiStorm RC – Custom RC builds, painting videos and more isn’t the ignition system a “self exciting” transistorised CDI system like on a chainsaw or most plant and small motorcycles?,great review, these sure look fun and a bit more durable than nitro savage.

This HPI is closer to the 5th scale side of things, and the Losi Gas MT is closer to a Nitro MT.

Your right it will bridge the gap. I will await the day when companies sell a conversion kit with a pipe, motor mount and ignition system to convert Nitro Chassis.

    Another awesome video.

Loving the concept of a “small” scale gaser and really hoping that this catches on. Always wanted a gas rig, but never wanted the hassle that goes along with nitro. And have no way to transport large scale rigs. Can’t wait to see the changes that this will bring.

Its an interesting concept. If it gets rid of all that tuning shit i maybe interested as I have a totally electric RC fleet due to ease of use but if this is simpler to run it will convert many brushless fans

Thats a real shame buddy hope you get it sorted. Look forward to seeing that bad boy in action. Every one I know whos into RC has at least one nitro. And am a little curious but love the switch on and go electric cars offer. If it ever gets to just fuel and go I will be in but till then think will stick with what I know. But keep watching guys like you testing gear for me. Top channel keep up the excelent work. Loving that Kahn build buddy

Looking at how the rollcage sit’s and looks I think it would look good with an FG 1/5th scale jeep body, I don’t think it would take much to turn it into a fifth scale gas crawler or just a short wheelbase Jeep or Landrover to hoon about with, with some descent wheels and tyre’s as you can get the stub axle conversion to take HPI Baja etc style wheels and tyre’s.

As have I. I’m not sponsored, opposed to what many may think. you will see an honest first attempt at a running video here within a day. I’m not too pleased so far, when I did get it to run it has been amazing, but the frustration of it not running (I think it’s the ignition unit) has taken the overhand. I’m determined to get it figured out.

4-After walking to him, it is necessary to do ????
