HPI SAVAGE XL OCTANE - RUNNING!

HPI SAVAGE XL OCTANE – RUNNING!

Finally: THE MONSTER IS ALIVE! It took 20 tanks of gas in various blends, more than a few blisters, three plugs, a whole lot of tuning and patience but my HPI/ Savage XL Octane is running, and it’s running like a CHAMP! Have a look at a quick display of this cars potential, and a brief explaination of what I went through to get this vehicle up and running.

The HPI Octane, being a new platform with so much new technology, is of course something we need to get used to. As there is no available online trouble shooting, the first buyers (like myself) will have to write the additional manual ourselves. Rather than being labelled “guinea pig” on such an early release, I would consider us who obtained the first vehicles “explorers”. This car has tremendous potential, once broken in it is everything I had hoped it to be an more: it’s LOUD, obnoxious, loves to crush stuff, has a true monstertruck style of driving, without it ever appearing off balance on higher speeds.

This car may not be for everyone, but if you have the knowledge, the patience, and are curious about the future of monster truck RC’s, this is the car for you. Expect a few not-so-raw videos in the weeks to come, testing, bashing and racing this car on several different surfaces, giving it the abuse it was meant to handle.

My aim is to give you honest, unbiased information, I’m not sponsored in any way. All I want is the hobby to progress.

I purchased this car at Østfold RC: www.Østfold-rc.no

It’s shifting just the larger engine and all that spinning mass makes the clutch hide the shift. Trust me it’s shifting. Just like in a nitro if you loosen your spur enough to get a tad if slip you won’t hear it shift either. But when you tighten the spur down you hear it slam into every gear.

Hey Chris! Wow you were right! You got it running perfect! It really makes me wanna go out and run mine, but sadly the sun is setting and I have to work full time until next week *sad face* but hopefully by then my outerwears will have arrived and I wont have to worry about the air filter getting so dirty right away.

When I took it out yesterday for its first actual bash in a dirt field, it got clogged up with dirt after the first tank of the day and the truck started to bog and not even reach shifting rpms, and sadly I forgot the spare at home, so that ended my day.

But, truck cleaned thoroughly, new filter, and the performance has returned, though I desperately need to tune the transmission, 2nd is too late and 3rd is waaaay too early, its almost immediate, but next day I got time, maybe tomorrow after work, I will surely tune it up to perfection.

Im also going to take the plug with me to my auto parts store and see if they have something that is the same size and will work in that engine that could be lower cost than the 20 dollar one HPI sells, but as for now the plug is fine so long as I clean it with a wire brush every now and then.

If you want a link to the outerwears im using, hit me up on skype, Ill send you the link.

Thanks so much for the suggestion, I was puzzled as it fired when I checked, then misfired on insertion. A few spares and a bit of alternative fuel blending is what made mine run right, I’m happy as can be at the moment.

Plugs will last very long if its not tuned too rich. Running way fat just kills them fast. Still sounds like you can lean her a tad on the high speed. I like to be just slightly lean of crackle at wot at top speed. This is safe and yet won’t foul plugs. Same for low end. Gots to be crisp. No crackle. Glad to see you got it going.

He is running like 22to 1 I would be running some h1r in that thing at 40:1 ratio. And that would be the richest I’ve ever ran any 2 stroke.

I so wish Traxxas made a gas monster. Hpi to me is over rated. I bought the savage XL and the revo 3.3. Model 5309 when it first came out. The XL linkages and steering was all loose in the first couple months. To this day my revo is still tight with its stock steering assembly.

We don’t even have 95 octane here our highest is 93. Dam u get 98. I can’t believe the threads are that rough for tuning that would suck.

Keep in mind the US octane numbers are different from the European ones, I’m not sure how to convert them, all I know is that the actual fuels available are pretty similar.

I want to see losi s 2 stroke gasser. They went with a super tiny bite and stroke. So tiny that people think it’s a nitro. Not understanding a nitro sounds like it does because of how small it is. This is basically a small weed eater style 2 stroke.

    Reply
    • HemiStorm RC - Custom RC builds, painting videos and more on

The sound is what made me get this Savage, that, and the triple sized engine compared to the Losi. The pitch of the Losi sound is indeed exactly like a nitro, and I wanted some low grunt.

brian hilligoss 100 low lead? Just run regular 87 unless it states in the manual. Higher octane fuel just has a higher resistance to detonation, so you can retard the timing, etc. With the Octane XL V2 HPI does the breaking in at the factory so it was more then likely fouling the plugs fast because of running rich combined with the super sensitive carb.

Nice, you need a wheelie bar! Just curious, is there a reason people seem to drive these with sort of like an on/off switch? I notice lots of throttle tapping and full throttle driving. Do these not run smoothly with a middle or cruising throttle setting?

    Reply
    • HemiStorm RC - Custom RC builds, painting videos and more on

You can absolutely run them with smoother throttle action! I was just mashing it a bit here as I wanted the clutch to hook up, as mine only has three pins instead of four. The clutch slipping in my case will cause some tremendous uneven wear on the shoes. It’s the last bit that I need to sort before being 100% sure that I can run this any way I desire.

Did you had a chance to see if some parts from the older Savages (XL, 4.6) are compatible with this Octane, or is the Octane a totaly new platform with no parts compatible at all from the older savages?

Turns off so quickly I have blisters on my fingers. Not to mentions the deadly screw on the right shock mount. I will get a new spark plug (or 2). I’m at 1/20 fuel mix now. I may try 1/25. Have fun with your savage and keep posting your videos. It helps ! Thx.

Nice job in getting the beast to run, I have one and been problem shooting it, I got it to run good but then  it dose not seem as fast as it should be. hpi say don’t adjust the low speed needle did you have to make adjustments to the low speed needle?my high speed is dialed in and im on my forth tank of gas so the motor is still tight. the only other problem is when I adjusted the 3rd gear I think I went to far because after a test run it seems the screw has rattled out, the truck still runs good but I think im going to have to pull the tranny out to open it up and see if the screw is in there.

    So this is gas power?
I’ve been wanting gas power in RC for a while…
40 mph on 1/8th scale would be good enough for me.

So sick of Nitro engines! Sure they are little screamers but that is just the problem—they are extremely finicky race engines and are why so many people have gone to electric.

With all the advances in electric it is time for GAS to HAPPEN

I would like to see a modern 2 AND 4 stroke gas engine for RC trucks and buggies
It’s not like an 1/8th Monster truck or buggy can’t handle a 2 stroke gas engine. They are big and can handle the weight

Was it the plug on the other HPI’s that wouldn’t run as well?
I just bought one of these, kind of on impulse, got a second hand offer on one that (supposedly) is all new, never run. I’ll know more tomorrow. And now I read about these issues. :/
So I’ll get some spare plugs and hope everything will work out fine. No other issues, right?

It looks like completely different power delivery to the nitro savage, less manic but more torque and smoother power delivery but slightly less top end speed. It still looks like huge fun,I guess they went for tunable jets rather than fixed jets to make it more fun to experiment and mess around with, all the two strokes I’ve had you either pull the cord or kick the starter and off you go with maybe jetting or needle changes ir you fitted a different exhaust or airfilter.
